Buninyong / ˈ b ʌ n ɪ n j ɒ ŋ / is a town 11 km from Ballarat in Victoria, Australia. [2] The town is on the Midland Highway , south of Ballarat on the road to Geelong . Buninyong was proclaimed a town on 27 June 1851 on the same day as Winchelsea, Portarlington, Longwood, Avenel, Cavendish, Euroa and Gisborne. [ 3 ]

It lies within the Mount Buninyong Scenic Reserve, 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) north of the town of Buninyong and 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) south of Ballarat , on the regional city's rural-urban fringe.
Buninyong Town Hall. Buninyong Town Hall is located in the centre of Buninyong, Victoria, Australia. Construction began on the combined town hall and courthouse on 30 August 1886. It is included on the Victorian Heritage Register for its architectural and historical importance to the State of Victoria. [1]
Buninyong was first incorporated as a road district on 9 July 1858, and became a shire on 18 February 1864. On 1 October 1915, it absorbed the Borough of Buninyong, which had been created on 15 July 1859. [2] On 6 May 1994, the Shire of Buninyong was abolished, and was split between the newly created City of Ballarat and Shire of Moorabool.
In 1876 the first school was opened, known for a short time as Burnt Hill State School (State School number 2176). Four years later the school was renamed Scotts Marsh and in 1889 it was again renamed, this time to Scotsburn. The school is now an annexe of Buninyong Primary School.
In August 1851, the news was received worldwide that, on top of several earlier finds, Thomas Hiscock, outside of Buninyong in central Victoria, had found still more deposits. [10] As gold fever took hold, the colony's population increased from 77,000 in 1851 to 198,496 in 1853. [ 11 ]
The electoral district of Buninyong was an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in Australia. It was created in the redistribution of electoral boundaries in 2013, and came into effect at the 2014 state election .
