The loggetta of the bell tower, designed by Jacopo Sansovino. In the fifteenth century, the procurators of Saint Mark de supra erected a covered exterior gallery attached to the bell tower. It was a lean-to wooden structure, partially enclosed, that served as a gathering place for nobles whenever they came to the square on government business.
It was renovated in 1170, and became the church of the German community in Venice, whose commercial headquarters were nearby at the Fondaco dei Tedeschi. The church was rebuilt again in the 18th century. The bell tower was built in 1747–54 based on designs of Giovanni Scalfarotto.
Codussi died in 1504 and the wings on either side of the tower were added by 1506 (perhaps to give greater stability to the whole). [11] Barbari's great woodcut of Venice dated 1500 shows the newly built clock tower before the wings were built, rising high above the original 12th-century Procuratie on either side.
