In 1975, the commission began a historical marker program to inform the public about significant buildings, sites, structures, objects, cemeteries, and districts in the state. Individuals or organizations requesting a marker must have available funds to purchase it since the state provides no funds.
General criteria for inclusion in the Alabama Register includes that the property be at least 40 years old and be associated with events of state or local significance, associated with the lives of persons of state or local significance, representative of a type, style, or period of architecture, or associated with Alabama's history or prehistory.

Greenwood Cemetery is a city cemetery established in c. 1820 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, U.S.. [2] [3] It is the oldest cemetery in the city and is located near the First African Baptist Church. It has a historical marker erected in 1996 by City of Tuscaloosa, the Heritage Commission of Tuscaloosa County, and Cahaba Trace Commission. [4]
