Anglers are attracted to the stocked walleye population in Gull Lake. Since 2003, at least 2,825,000 fry Walleye have been stocked into Gull Lake by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. As of 2007 the average length and weight of a walleye in Gull lake was 14.6 inches (37 cm) and 1.3 pounds (0.6 kg).
Little Gull Island is an even smaller island about a mile to the south. In Leelanau County on Northport Bay of the Grand Traverse Bay region. It is a 5-acre (20,000 m 2 ) "No Trespassing Nature Preserve" owned by the Leelanau Conservancy which is dedicated to protecting this southernmost herring gull colony nesting area on Lake Michigan.
The name was probably derived from the seagulls which at times come inland from Lake Michigan in large numbers. The total surface area of this lake is 2,030 acres (8 km 2), with maximum depths of 110 feet (34 m). This deep, clear lake has numerous holes in excess of 75 ft (23 m), and has one large island in the south end.
Houses on Gull Lake's shores are the most prized and expensive, and have attracted residents such as Kristi Yamaguchi and her husband Bret Hedican. [10] There are several high-end resorts in the city, including Cragun's Resort, Madden's Resort, Kavanaugh's Resort, and Gull Lake Resort. Several of the resorts have golf courses. [11]
