Until 1990 the Western Australian Premier's Book Awards were called the WA Week Literary Awards. [1] The title of the award refers to the year of publication, rather than the year in which the awards were announced e.g.the 2011 awards for works published that year were announced in 2012.

His second novel, Benang, won the Western Australian Premier's Book Awards 1999, the Miles Franklin Award 2000, and the Kate Challis RAKA Award 2001. Both novels were influenced by his research and seemed to be semi-autobiographical.

Peter Cowan's novel The Color of the Sky won the Western Australian Premier's Book Award for Fiction and the Western Australia Week Literary Award in 1986. [citation needed] In 1987, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia, [5] and in 1992 he received the Patrick White Award for an Australian Writer of Great Distinction. [6]
