Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) is a distance learning university founded in 1996, located in Mysore in the Indian state of Karnataka.
The university was founded on 14 February 2008 and formally established by the State Government of Karnataka through the Karnataka State Dr Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University Act, 2009 [4] which was duly passed in State Legislature.
The Karnataka State Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University Bill, 2016 was passed in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in March 2016, [5] and in the Karnataka Legislative Council in July 2016. [6] The university was inaugurated in March 2018 by chief minister Siddaramaiah, and started operating from the district administration building.
The university is the second-oldest in the state of Karnataka, after the University of Mysore. [4] Karnatak University once served most parts of Karnataka, including the districts of Dharwad, Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Raichur, Bidar and Ballari until the 1980s.

Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women's University (KSAWU, Vijayapura) also known as Karnataka State Women's University was established in August 2003 and is the first university exclusively for women in the state of Karnataka. It is in the city of Vijayapur (formerly known as Bijapur). Prof. B K Tulasimala is its incumbent vice-chancellor. [4]
