Rice Army Air Field (also known as Rice Air Base [1] or Rice AAF) is an abandoned World War II airfield in Rice Valley of the southern Mojave Desert, located 1-mile (1.6 km) east-southeast of the community of Rice. The airfield is located in Riverside County just south of the San Bernardino county line and State Route 62.
To the east of Rice is the Rice Municipal Airport, which was acquired by the United States Army's 4th Air Support Command in 1942 as a sub-base of Thermal Army Airfield, [3] and was operational by the end of the year. In the mid-1960s, there was an attempt to get private financing to resurface the runway. At the time, the paved runway (10/28) was 2600' by 46', but there was a N/E-S/W turf runway on the west side which started at old Irving Park road and ended before the C&NW Railroad tracks aligned with the taxiway. The turf runway was 1200' to 1400' long.
As of the 2020 census [3] there were 95,508 people, 35,760 households, and 23,896 families residing in the township. The population density was 3,413.56 inhabitants per square mile (1,317.98/km 2).
