High Fidelity Pure Audio, occasionally abbreviated as HFPA, is a marketing initiative, spearheaded by Sony Music Universal Music Group, for audio-only Blu-ray optical discs. [2] Launched in 2013 [ 3 ] as a potential successor to the compact disc (CD), it has been compared with DVD-Audio and SACD , which had similar aims.
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart was released in the United States on February 3, 2009, by Slumberland Records. [3] [4] In other territories, the album was released by different labels, including Fortuna Pop! in Europe, Lost & Lonesome Recording Co. in Australia, and Fastcut Records in Japan.
The complete album was combined with Fitzgerald's 1954 album Songs in a Mellow Mood and re-issued on CD in 1994 by MCA Records on the GRP Jazz label under the title Pure Ella. Fitzgerald released two other albums of all Gershwin material, Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook (1959) and Nice Work If You Can Get It (1983).

The first single from the album, the Orbit-produced "Pure Shores", preceded the album by several months, having been previously released on the soundtrack for the 2000 film The Beach.
