Cardinal Place is a retail and office development in London, near Victoria Station and opposite Westminster Cathedral. The site consists of three buildings covering over a million square feet on Victoria Street next door to Portland House , and was designed by EPR Architects and built by Sir Robert McAlpine .
EPR Architects is a London-based architectural practice first established in late 1945 by Cecil Elsom CBE (17 January 1912 - 3 April 2006) before becoming Elsom, Pack and Roberts in 1947, under the names of its founders, Cecil Elsom, William Pack and Alan Roberts. [1]
Thomas Wolsey was born in about 1473, the son of Robert Wolsey of Ipswich and his wife, Joan Daundy. [3] Widespread traditions identify his father as a butcher; his modest origin became a topic of criticism later, when he amassed wealth and power that critics thought more befitting a member of the high nobility.
The architects were Howard, Fairbairn & Partners, and the development took place from 1959 to 1963. [1] Pevsner notes that the architectural form of Portland House was influenced by the Pirelli Tower (1955–58) in Milan by architect Gio Ponti. [1] The development was known as Stag Place. [1] Today the site is Cardinal Place.
