The August Bank Holiday or Summer Bank Holiday [1] is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, part of the statutory bank holiday provision. Originally, the holiday was held on the first Monday of August across the country, but was changed in the late 1960s to the last Monday in August for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
In 1968 and 1969 the new "August" bank holiday fell in September. This was as a result of the decision to move the holiday to the end of the month, and the nearest Monday being taken. The current definition was introduced in 1971. In 1995 the early May bank holiday was moved to Monday 8 May to commemorate the 50th anniversary of VE Day. [38]
