A Swiss German speaker. Swiss German (Standard German: Schweizerdeutsch, Alemannic German: Schwiizerdütsch, Schwyzerdütsch, Schwiizertüütsch, Schwizertitsch Mundart, [note 1] and others) is any of the Alemannic dialects spoken in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, and in some Alpine communities in Northern Italy bordering Switzerland.
Swiss Standard German differs from Swiss German, an umbrella term for the various Alemannic German dialects (in the sense of "traditional regional varieties") that are the default everyday languages in German-speaking Switzerland. Standard German is a pluricentric language.
The program offers courses and training programmes in languages, arts and handicrafts, health and fitness, by about 7,500 course instructors. [4] The range of courses and training programmes is essentially divided into five main areas, namely languages, culture and creativity, exercise and health, management and economics, information technology and new media, and training for trainers. [1]
Schweizerisches Idiotikon ("the Swiss idioticon", [1] also known as Wörterbuch der schweizerdeutschen Sprache "Dictionary of the Swiss German language") is an ongoing, major project of lexicography of the Swiss German dialects. Publication began in 1881 and is projected to be complete by 2022.
The four national languages of Switzerland are German, French, Italian, and Romansh. [4] German, French, and Italian maintain equal status as official languages at the national level within the federal administration of the Swiss Confederation, while Romansh is used in dealings with people who speak it. [5]
