Xylometazoline, also spelled xylomethazoline, is a medication used to reduce symptoms of nasal congestion, allergic rhinitis, and sinusitis. [2] It is used directly in the nose as a spray or drops. [3] Side effects include trouble sleeping, irritation of the nose, nausea, nosebleed (3%), period pain (10%) and headache (3%).
Nasal congestion can interfere with hearing and speech. Significant congestion may interfere with sleep, cause snoring, and can be associated with sleep apnea or upper airway resistance syndrome. [5] In children, nasal congestion from enlarged adenoids has caused chronic sleep apnea with insufficient oxygen levels and hypoxia.
Onset of effects is within minutes when used in the eyes and within an hour when used in the nose. [8] Effects last for up to 12 hours. [8] Common side effects include headache, sleepiness, change in taste, and sore throat. [8] It is unclear if use is safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. [9]
