Ayer (/ ɛər / AIR) is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. Originally part of Groton , it was incorporated February 14, 1871, [ 1 ] and became a major commercial railroad junction.
Ayer is located in northwestern Middlesex County at (42.560033, -71.585321). [3] The CDP occupies the center of the town of Ayer and is bordered to the west by the Devens CDP. Massachusetts Routes 2A and 111 pass through the village as Park Street and East Main Street.

The Ayer Shirley Regional High School is located in Ayer, Massachusetts. Its colors are maroon and white, and its mascot is the panther. This school educates about 350 students in 9th to 12th grade.
The organization that operated the hospital was created in September 1927 when the Ayer Hospital Association, founded in 1912, accepted control of Ayer Private Hospital, founded 1924. [2] This organization operated the facility until 1964 when it was merged with the Groton Community Hospital, forming Nashoba Community Hospital . [ 3 ]
The district's oldest building is one of these: built in 1868, it was originally located south of the tracks, and was moved to its present location opposite Pleasant Street in 1878. Ayer Town Hall stands near the eastern end of the district; it is a fine example of high-style Victorian Gothic architecture. [2]
After the 2010 census, the third district shifted from covering east-central Worcester County and western Norfolk and Bristol counties to covering northeastern Worcester County, northern and western Middlesex County, and northwestern Essex county.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 31.2% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 37.1% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males.
