The Blackshear Times is an American weekly newspaper founded in 1889 and published in Blackshear, Georgia. The Times is a community newspaper, and its coverage is primarily centered on the events in Pierce County, Georgia. The current owners of The Times are husband and wife Rick and Sandy Head, publisher and president, respectively. [2]
Edward Blackshear moved to the area circa 1822 from what was then Pulaski County, Georgia. Edward was the brother of General David Blackshear, the namesake of Lake Blackshear and the town of Blackshear, Georgia. Edward died September 3, 1829, and his land passed to his wife and five children.
The first such newspaper in Georgia was The Colored American, founded in Augusta in 1865. [1] However, most were founded in Atlanta. While most such newspapers in Georgia have been very short-lived, a few, such as the Savannah Tribune, Atlanta Daily World, and Atlanta Inquirer, have had extensive influence over many decades.
