Paul Dedrick Gray was born in Los Angeles, California.Later his family relocated to Des Moines, Iowa.He played guitar but switched to bass after he relocated to Iowa. In his youth, Gray performed in bands such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Anal Blast, Vexx, Body Pit, The Have Nots and Inveigh Catharsis.
Before forming Slipknot with Shawn Crahan and Paul Gray in 1995, Colsefni drummed and occasionally sang in a number of local bands, often crossing paths with other future Slipknot members. His first band was the death metal band Vexx, which was formed in 1988 and saw Colsefni joined by Gray on bass and Josh Brainard on guitar and vocals. [ 3 ]
Of Slipknot's nine-member lineup, which lasted from 1999–2010, Joey was the third to join the band. He was also the drummer and founder of Scar the Martyr, which formed in 2013 and disbanded in 2016.
