Two no-hoper mates, habitual drinkers and gamblers, are lured by an incognito stranger into paying for, looking after, and racing, a Greyhound which they name "Silent Partner". After a series of unsuccessful runs they are duped into injecting the dog with a stimulant before the race; it dies, but not before winning.
It is centred on greyhound racing in a Catholic community after the intercommunal "Troubles" have ended but where their legacy remains strong. The film was well received in Ireland, with Gillian Anderson receiving an IFTA Award for Best International Actress. The film's title is based on the name of a comic book shown in the movie.
