The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SDSCPA) is an audition-only public arts magnet school in southeastern San Diego, California. It is a non-tuition school in San Diego Unified School District. It provides pre-professional training in the arts alongside a college preparatory curriculum.
Community college education in San Diego can be traced to 1914 when the board of education of the San Diego City Schools authorized postsecondary classes for the youth of San Diego. Classes opened that fall at San Diego High School with four faculty members and 35 students, establishing San Diego City College.
The school is named after the Clairemont community in which it is located. When Clairemont opened its doors in 1958, it consisted of no senior class, a junior class (class of 1960) consisting mostly of transfers from Mission Bay High School in nearby Pacific Beach and Kearny High School, and a sophomore class (class of 1961) coming from its neighbor, Marston Junior High.
In 1964-65, five San Diego County colleges formed the Pacific Southwest Conference: Grossmont, Palomar, San Diego City, San Diego Mesa and Southwestern Colleges. For two years, 1965 to 1967, Oceanside/Carlsbad (now MiraCosta College) and Imperial Valley College joined the Conference.
