The XF was launched with an automatic gearbox only, and all models initially used the six-speed ZF 6HP26 automatic transmission. For model years 2010–2012, some engines (the 3.0 L diesel and 5.0 L supercharged petrol) used the second generation six-speed ZF 6HP28 transmission .
It uses a Lepelletier gear mechanism, [2] an epicyclic/planetary gearset, which can provide more gear ratios with significantly fewer components. This means the 6HP 26 is actually lighter than its five-speed 5HP predecessors. The 6HP is the first transmission to use this 6-speed gearset concept.
The 2.0-litre I4 engine is offered in 197–236 hp (147–176 kW; 200–239 PS) power output configurations and a 335 hp (250 kW; 340 PS) 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine is also offered as the ultimate engine option, with all versions coming with an automatic transmission. The long wheelbase models come with four-wheel-drive only.
The significant changes were mechanical, with the 4.0 litre fuel-injected single overhead camshaft (OHC) engine and the four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission options offered in the EB Falcon range replacing the previous carburetted 4.1 litre overhead valve (OHV) engine and three-speed transmissions offered in the XF. An XF Falcon S-Pack equipped with the EFI engine and four-speed manual transmission tested by Wheels magazine in 1984 accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.3 seconds, ran the standing 400 metres (0.25 mi) in 16.4 seconds, and ran to its 4500 rpm redline in fourth gear for a top speed of 190 km/h (118.1 mph). The 4HP is a 4-speed Automatic transmission family with a hydrodynamic Torque converter with an electronic hydraulic control for passenger cars from ZF Friedrichshafen AG.In selector level position "P", the output is locked mechanically.
