Groveland-Big Oak Flat is located at Elevation is 867 m (2,846 ft). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 28.8 square miles (75 km 2), of which, 28.5 square miles (74 km 2) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km 2) of it (0.90%) is water.
Groveland was originally a gold rush town and then became a sleepy farming community until the San Francisco Hetch Hetchy water project made it their headquarters and built a railroad yard and hospital for the work crews (both now gone). From 1915 till 1935, Groveland was a boom town supporting seven hotels, 10,000 residents and much activity.
It was built in 1902 by one of Groveland's founding citizens, Elliot E. Edge. Edge was one of the first elected city officials. The Edge Memorial Methodist Church was named in memory of him after his death in 1934. Edge's son, L. D.
