This results in greater airflow through one nostril with periodic alternation between the nostrils. It is a physiological congestion of the nasal conchae , also called the nasal turbinates (curled bony projections within the nasal cavities), due to selective activation of one half of the autonomic nervous system by the hypothalamus .
In humans and other mammals, the anatomy of a typical respiratory system is the respiratory tract. The tract is divided into an upper and a lower respiratory tract. The upper tract includes the nose, nasal cavities, sinuses, pharynx and the part of the larynx above the vocal folds.

The shape of the nose is determined by the nasal bones and the nasal cartilages, including the nasal septum, which separates the nostrils and divides the nasal cavity into two. The nose has an important function in breathing.
The lateral crus is the outer portion of the major alar cartilages that associate with the ala of the nose. Major alar and minor alar cartilages, seen from below. Both crus come together to form an oval tip at each nostril. Both sides of the major alar cartilages merge to form a notch at the tip, which is referred to as the apex of the nose.
Fish do not breathe through noses, but they do have two small holes used for smelling, which can also be referred to as nostrils (with the exception of Cyclostomi, which have just one nostril).
