Morgan County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia.As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,063. [1] Its county seat is Berkeley Springs. [2] The county was formed in 1820 from parts of Hampshire and Berkeley Counties and named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, prominent soldier of the American Revolutionary War. [3]

Richard Morgan (ca. 1700–1763) bought lands in 1730 that included much of present-day Shepherdstown. In 1734 he received one of the first grants of 500 acres (2.0 km 2) from Lord Fairfax, selling some land to Thomas Shepherd, who founded Shepherdstown. During the French and Indian Wars, Morgan was active in raising troops from the area.
Randolph County is the largest by area at 1,040 square miles (2,694 km 2), and Hancock County is the smallest at 83 square miles (215 km 2). [8] Kanawha County contributed land to the founding of 12 West Virginia counties [12] and has the largest population (174,805 in 2023). Wirt County has the smallest population (5,000 in 2023). [13]

Johnsons Mill is an unincorporated community in eastern Morgan County in the U.S. state of West Virginia on Johnson's Mill Road (West Virginia Secondary Route 26). It is centrally located between three other small rural hamlets along Sleepy Creek and is named for the "Johnson's Mill" that once operated here.
