Portmarnock was the venue for the first Irish Open in 1927, and has hosted the tournament on many occasions since, including 13 following its revival in 1975. [1] Many other important golf tournaments have been held at the club, including the British Amateur Championship in 1949 and 2019, the Walker Cup in 1991, and the Canada Cup in 1960.
Another links course, part of the Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links complex, that opened in the 1990s, was designed by German golfer Bernhard Langer. [21] That golfing hotel is built around St. Marnock's, the former home of a branch of the Jameson distilling family, which had its own private golf course. [22] St.

The team was named St. Marnocks after a contemporary of St. Patrick, who first introduced Christianity to Portmarnock. The team wore a black jersey with an amber sash, the colours of which were inspired by the crest of the Jameson family, of whiskey fame, who lived locally. Success came to the newly formed team quite quickly.

Jameson was born in Norman, Oklahoma and graduated from Dallas' Sunset High School in 1939. She started playing golf at age 11. According to her obituary in the New York Times, her mother gave her 50 cents for a greens fee and another 50 cents to rent a set of clubs at a public golf course in Dallas when she was 11 years old.
