Lafayette football began in 1882. The game was closer to rugby back then and even the goals and touchdowns were recorded separately in the scores. After football rules were standardized in 1883, Lafayette's manager Theodore L. Welles approached Lehigh and offered to play them.

With 1:19 left in the game, Lehigh had a chance to put together a game-winning drive, but instead failed to convert on a fourth-down. Lafayette punter Jakob Tresik ran out of the back of the endzone to run out the clock, resulting in a safety and a final score of 14-11. With this loss the rivalry is 80-71-5 in favor of Lafayette.

In 1964, the 100th game ended in a 6–6 tie. In 1987 (game 123), Lehigh defeated Lafayette in the last game played at Taylor Stadium. Although Lafayette won the first game played at brand new Goodman Stadium in 1989, Lehigh has won 9 of the last 11 at Goodman, and 16 of 25 since Patriot League play began.
