The trade school that became Makerere University began operating in 1921 with the first classes in carpentry, building construction and mechanics. [12] In 1922, it was founded as the "Uganda Technical College" with additional courses in the arts, education, agriculture and medicine.
In 2004, the school was advised by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE) to apply for a separate license. After disagreements between the university and UNCHE were settled in court, [ 4 ] the UNHCE licensed the university on 9 August 2005.
This will result in the change of its name to a new name, yet to be determined. [2] In August 2013, Uganda's Attorney General began drafting the necessary legislation to separate MUBS from Makerere University. The draft was expected to be presented to the Ugandan Parliament for debate and enactment into law. [5]
