The building was designed in 1909 in the Chicago school style popularized by Louis Sullivan. [4] Its original tenant, the DeWitt–Seitz Company, was one of many jobbing companies founded in the port city of Duluth, buying goods from manufacturers in the eastern U.S. and Canada and selling them to growing inland markets in the west.
They also owned Sklar's Furniture Store in Duluth's West End in the mid-1970s, where it was surrounded by 4 other furniture stores. It was sold to the larger Massachusetts -based chain Zayre in 1967 [ 2 ] [ 3 ] and the Zayre locations in the Twin Cities market were thereafter known as "Zayre Shoppers' City."
The Duluth News Tribune once reported that the "Lake View Store is the most modern store in Duluth" and "Every business concern in Morgan Park will be housed in a commodious building about 200 feet (61 m) long and 100 feet (30 m) wide".
