The centre's opening was met with success as it was the first major indoor shopping centre in Dundee. It became popular with shoppers in Dundee and was the preferred shopping location for Dundonians over the 1960s open-air Overgate and continued to be the case until the demolition and reconstruction of the Overgate in 2000.
The modern city centre is still divided into the seven medieval thoroughfares: the Seagait, Murraygait, Marketgait (now High Street), Nethergait, Overgait, Wellgait and the Cowgait- “Gait” being a Scots word for street- which all remain today (albeit with modified spelling and with both the "Overgate" and "Wellgate" having become enclosed shopping centres.)

In 1885, William Rettie joined Low in partnership. Rettie was described in the 1877 Dundee Directory as a grocery and tea dealer, with stores in Rosebank Street and Dudhope Street. Rettie had married Low's sister, Annie, in 1884. [9] [10] The Dundee Directory of 1885 had listed that the company had eight stores. [11]

Founded as the young fashion section of Selfridges department store by Charles Clore. Later opened in Lewis department stores and as separate shops. In 1999 Miss Selfridge was purchased by Arcadia Group as part of Sir Philip Green's purchase of Sears plc. Monsoon
