Until recently this species was combined with the Eastern Towhee as a single species, the Rufous-sided Towhee. They are now considered distinct species and vary considerably in voice and appearance. The two species are known to interbreed where they come in contact. Subspecies
Jun 6, 2013. #1. Just saw a new bird at my feeder yesterday. I use sunflower chips to feed the finches, but several other birds visit. This one was about the size of a cardinal....but all black except for 2 white bars across both wings. They were more prominent when he opened his wings to stay on the perch.

SOLVED: The mystery bird is an Eastern Towhee who isn't finishing his sentences! I heard the call again in the woods today, and I noted both the two-note and the typical "Drink Your Tea" song were used interchangeably by an ET. Hearing them sung together made the ID obvious! Thanks again for the help -- and good call, Andy!
A friend asked if I would submit a photo taken I think in Hilton Head South Carolina. If it wasn't taken there it was in upstate New York. I thought it was an Eastern Towhee but she's not sure. Thanks for any help. Kathy
