Because I started loading a 270 years ago and settled in on R-22 7828 and aa magpro I never felt the need to jump onto developing every new powder that came along. But I can see where Superformance if Hodgdons burn rate chart can be believed falls right into the correct area for our 270's.
289. Sep 26, 2011. #1. Hey fellas, zeroed my little 270 in this morning. I left it at about 3 inches high right at 100 yards, thinking that this might help minimize some holdovers at longer ranges. Can anyone kind of break it down as far as how much this might decrease holdover?
Mine will be a 270 WSM but that is just because I think the WSM case will launch the 170 grain with much better velocities than the standard 270 Win. I was hoping to find a 1:7.5" or a 1:7" twist rate. I think that the 170's would perform better with the slightly tighter twist. have fun! shoot more!
Let me assure you from experience, a 270 winchester will NOT last anywhere close to 3000. My only 270 win barrel got me less than 1100 rounds on a CM factory barrel waiting 3 min between each shot and 5 min minimum between groups. It was a hunting rifle so that did last me a few years of range, load development, practice and field rounds.
Apr 25, 2023. #2. I love the .270 Win and encourage everyone to own a few. That said, I've moved to the .308 Win for very similar reasons. I could always find .308 Win or 7.62x51mm to shoot. The same couldn't be said for .270 in my area of Southeastern Colorado. 6.5 Creedmoor was another I never had issues finding. C.
LRH Supporter. Depends on your load, how you use/clean the rifle, and your accuracy requirement. A 3100 130gr load shot hot will be a less barrel life then 140 gr shot at 2950FPS. On average, I would keep an eye out for .25-.5MOA accuracy loss when the barrel gets 1000-1500 rounds. My 270WSM was 500-1000 rounds.
Lower velocity loads USUALLY will give better accuracy at the sacrifice of down range performance. You probably found the sweet spot for your barrel. Out of my 8 270's, I have consistently achieved good velocity with R19 and a close second with H4831. As one of the posts mentioned, that is the joy of reloading.
