In December 1990, it was relocated to Camp Hansen. During June 1995, it was reassigned to Headquarters and Service Battalion at the III MEF.

The 9th Engineer Battalion was activated on 1 November 1965 at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and was under the operational control of the Commanding General Force Troops, located at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms.
