Aspergillus wentii was first described by German mycologist Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Wehmer in 1896. [3] Following a morphology-based classification scheme he created in 1901, Wehmer grouped A. wentii under a category of large Aspergilli that he called the "Macroaspergilli" due to its large fruiting body structure (the conidial head). The fruiting body is shaped like a funnel expanded at the top, the stalk seamless with the cap, which is 0.5–7 centimetres (1 ⁄ 4 – 2 + 3 ⁄ 4 inches) in diameter. They grow up to about 10 cm (4 in) in height, [2] [3] [4] exceptionally 15 cm (6 in).
