Tresco Heliport (ICAO: EGHT) is a heliport located on the island of Tresco, in the Isles of Scilly off the southwest coast of the United Kingdom. [2] The heliport was served by a scheduled helicopter service from 1983 to 2012, and since 2020 a new scheduled service now operates from the new Penzance Heliport.
Skybus became the sole remaining air link for the Isles of Scilly from October 2012, when the helicopter service from Penzance ended. [10] On 9 April 2013, a new £1 million passenger terminal was officially opened. Work had begun in July 2012 and included new baggage handling and arrivals facilities and a new control tower. [11]
Services started on 1 May 1964 when British European Airways (BEA) Helicopters operated the first service between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly with a Sikorsky S-61.. The original heliport was formally opened five months later on 1 September 1964 by Councillor Alfred Beckerleg, the Mayor of Penzance with the Lady Mayoress, and cost £88,000 [3] (equivalent to £2,300,000 in 2023). Tresco is the setting for the 2010 film Archipelago, directed by Joanna Hogg and starring Tom Hiddleston. It premiered at the 2010 London Film Festival, and was released on 4 March 2011 in the U.K. and Ireland. In the early 1980s Tresco was used by the group Blondie for the location of filming the video to the song "Island of Lost Souls".
The helicopter is the only direct flight to the island of Tresco. [96] By sea, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company provides a passenger and cargo service from Penzance to St Mary's, which is currently operated by the Scillonian III passenger ferry, supported until summer 2017 by the Gry Maritha cargo vessel and now by the Mali Rose.
Their head office is located in the Isles of Scilly Travel Centre in Penzance, Cornwall. [1] [2] Isles of Scilly Skybus Limited holds a United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority Type B Operating Licence; it is permitted to carry passengers, cargo and mail on aircraft with fewer than 20 seats and/or weighing less than 10 tonnes.
