Mandan Commercial Historic District is a 20-acre (8.1 ha) historic district in Mandan, North Dakota that has work dating to 1884. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1985. The listing includes 35 contributing buildings and a contributing object.
Mandan is a city on the eastern border of Morton County and the eighth-most populous city in North Dakota. Founded in 1879 on the west side of the upper Missouri River, it was designated in 1881 as the county seat of Morton County. [7] The population was 24,206 at the 2020 census. [4]
The building was built by Louis B. Hanna (1861–1948) who served as Governor of North Dakota (1913–1917). In 1916, he purchased and razed the Inter-Ocean Hotel in downtown Mandan and drew up plans for a new hotel building. The building was designed by Fargo-based architect William J. Gage (1891-1965). The first steamboat to journey up the upper-Missouri River was the Yellowstone which arrived in 1832 carrying 1,500 gallons of goods and liquor. George Catlin visited in 1832, and Karl Bodmer and Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied stayed the winter of 1833-1834.
