Trail Creek is called myewes-zibiwe ("trail-creek") in the Potawatomi language. The name refers to the "Potawatomi Trail" that ran from Chicago along the south shore of Lake Michigan, along Trail Creek, then to Hudson Lake and finally to the French Fort St. Joseph and the nearby Jesuit mission (now Niles, Michigan) on the St. Joseph River.
