Gates is a census-designated place in the town of Gates, Monroe County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census , it had a population of 4,910, out of 28,400 in the entire town of Gates. The CDP is in central Monroe County, in the eastern part of the town of Gates.
In 1808 the town was subdivided, and the part still called Northampton was renamed "Gates" and incorporated on April 1, 1813, in honor of General Horatio Gates. In 1821 Monroe County was formed, including the town of Gates. Parts of the town were later detached to form the city of Rochester and the town of Greece, both of which now border the town.
Pere Marquette State Park was founded in 1931 as the Piasa Bluffs State Park, but was soon renamed. The park's heart is a Civilian Conservation Corps-built lodge, first built in the 1930s and later expanded in 1985 to contain 72 rooms. A visitor center, with exhibits on local ecology and history, opened in 1997.

Gates' first post office was established in 1882 on the south side of the Santiam River as Henness, named for the first postmaster, Jane Henness. The post office later moved to the north side of the river as Gatesville but the post office was established with the name Gates on February 12, 1892.
