Carteret County (/ ˌ k ɑːr. t ə ˈ r ɛ t / KAR-tuh-REHT or / ˌ k ɑːr. t ɜːr ˈ ɛ t / KAR-tur-ET) [1] [2] is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 67,686. [3] Its county seat is Beaufort. [4] The county was created in 1722 as Carteret Precinct and gained county status in 1739. [5]

The department was equipped with a computer system to host an integrated records database and collect and process taxes electronically in the 1990s; computerization was completed by 1997. [3] [5] In January 2011 a Local Government Division was created in the department to advise local governments' tax collection, auditing, and other processes. [6]
Townships were created under the county unit of government, with every county divided into them, and each given their own township board. The boards comprised two justices of the peace and a clerk each elected to a two-year term, and together they were responsible for roads, township finances, and property tax assessments.
This ruling remained intact until 1979 when a legal settlement permitted Salter Path residents to hold a title to their property and for Carteret County to levy taxes on the former squatter's village. [4]
Cedar Point is located at the western end of Carteret County. It is bordered to the north by the town of Peletier and to the east by the town of Cape Carteret.To the south is Bogue Sound, crossed by the B. Cameron Langston Bridge to Emerald Isle, and to the west is the tidal White Oak River, crossed by North Carolina Highway 24, leading to the town of Swansboro in Onslow County.
