On September 22, 1998, a group of 14 World War II veterans and their wives met at the Chief Petty Officer Club at NAS Whidbey Island. There they decided to form an organization and the following year they established the PBY Memorial Association. [3] [4] The group began an attempt to purchase a PBY in 2002, but it was eventually unsuccessful. [4]
