The Crane Chorus was founded in 1931 by Helen M. Hosmer. It is composed almost entirely of music majors at the Crane School of Music, and usually numbers between 185 and 200 singers. Principal conductors have included Helen M. Hosmer, Brock McElheran, Calvin Gage, Stanley Romanstein, Rick Bunting, Daniel Gordon, and Jeffrey Francom.
George was born in Pittsburg, California, and he grew up in Franklinton, Louisiana, near New Orleans.With voice scholarships, he obtained a bachelor's degree from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana, while studying with Ralph Roberts and a master's degree from Louisiana State University, where he studied with Paul Knowles.
He attended Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam for two years before transferring to Arizona State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in music performance in 1986. He received his master's degree in conducting from George Mason University in 1991.
The Crane School of Music campus is in the northern part of the campus, east of the academic quad. The college has two libraries, the Frederick W. Crumb Memorial Library in the center of the academic quad, and the Crane Music Library in Schuette Hall at the Crane complex. The college also has six performance facilities.
