It produces and markets pet food, treats, and cat and dog litter. Some of its pet food brands include Purina Pro Plan, Purina Dog Chow, Friskies, Beneful and Purina One.
Fortunately, Purina hasn’t issued a voluntary recall on any of its cat food products in 2024. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) so far hasn’t mandated Purina to issue a recall.
If left untreated, the condition can lead to cataracts, increasing weakness in the legs (neuropathy), malnutrition, ketoacidosis, dehydration, and death. [2] Diabetes mainly affects middle-aged and older dogs, but there are juvenile cases. [3][4][5] The typical canine diabetes patient is middle-aged, female, and overweight at diagnosis.
Studies have found the prevalence of heightened IGF-1 levels in cats with diabetes mellitus to range between 17.8% 27.3%. [5] [1] According to Claudia Reusch, a professor at the University of Zurich, the prevalence of hypersomatotropism in diabetic cats is 10-15%, in cases that are hard to regulate it rises to 30% or higher. [1]
