The Rich Text Format was the standard file format for text-based documents in applications developed for Microsoft Windows. Microsoft did not initially make the RTF specification publicly available, making it difficult for competitors to develop document conversion features in their applications.
Like RTF, RTFD files can be opened on macOS, which supports bundles. Mac applications that support RTF and RTFD include Apple's TextEdit and Pages, and a third-party free program called Bean. However, Microsoft's Office for Mac and most other document applications on the platform do not support RTFD.
The compatibility pack does not require Microsoft Office, but does require Microsoft Windows. It can be used as a standalone converter with products that read Office's older binary formats, such as OpenOffice.org. [19] Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac and Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 support the Office Open XML format. [20]

TextEdit uses the Cocoa text system to read and write documents in Rich Text Format (RTF), Rich Text Format Directory, plain text, and HTML formats, and can open (but not save) old SimpleText files. It also has access to the operating system's built-in spell-checking service.
The program includes text styles, text cleaning, and can read and save ASCII, Unicode, RTF, older formats such as AppleWorks and older versions of Microsoft Word. It can read text out loud, play audio files, and run QuickTime movies. Tex-Edit Plus supports PowerPC and Intel Macs. It requires Mac OS 10.4 through 10.12.
