Covington is located in north central Georgia, in the eastern part of Metro Atlanta. Interstate 20 runs to the north of the city, with access from exits 90, 92, and 93. Via I-20, downtown Atlanta is 35 mi (56 km) west, and Augusta is 112 mi (180 km) east.
The county is located in the Piedmont region of the state. The majority of Newton County is located in the Upper Ocmulgee River sub-basin of the Altamaha River basin. A small eastern portion of the county, from southwest of Social Circle to southwest of Newborn , is located in the Upper Oconee River sub-basin of the same Altamaha River basin.

State Route 81 (SR 81) is a 69.0-mile-long (111.0 km) diagonal state highway that travels southwest-to-northeast in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Its path exists within portions of Henry, Newton, Walton, and Barrow counties. It connects the McDonough area with Winder, via Covington and Loganville.
SR 142 begins at an intersection with SR 81, north of Covington, in Newton County. It heads southeast to first meet InteSheate 20 (I-20) and then U.S. Route 278 (US 278)/SR 12 in Covington. The three routes head east concurrently and cross over the Alcovy River.
