The Chautauqua Park Historic District is located on the north side of Des Moines, Iowa, United States. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1990. [1] It is part of the Suburban Development in Des Moines Between the World Wars, 1918--1941 MPS.
Brown's Park continued for a while longer and the streetcar line from Des Moines opened in 1889. The historic district is the northwest section of a former suburb known as Greenwood Park. It was incorporated as a city in the area of Brown's Park in 1881, and in 1890 it was annexed into the city of Des Moines.
The period of significance for the West Ninth Streetcar Line Historic District is 1883 to 1936, which was the timeframe that the street served as a streetcar route. It was Des Moines’ most fully developed streetcar corridor in the Victorian era and it remains largely intact. [2] It was in competition with the West Sixth Streetcar Line.

The historic district lies north of Kingman Boulevard and south of Cottage Grove Avenue, between 27th Street on the east and 31st Street on the west. It is composed of three full blocks and parts of two others in the Kingman and University plats. The plats are unique in Des Moines as they are oriented east to west as opposed to north to south. [2]
