After Goh's Exeggcute is evolved into an Exeggutor, Ash tells him about Alolan Exeggutor and Goh becomes fired up with the idea of catching one. Ash and Goh travel to the Alola region where Ash is reunited with his Alolan Pokémon and his old friends, Pokémon, and his mentor Professor Kukui (as well the new addition to the Kukui family).
Ash and Clemont have their first Kalos Region Pokémon battle. Team Rocket is also in the Kalos Region and they try to catch Ash's Pikachu, but they fail, thanks to Froakie, a Kalos Water-Type Pokémon starter who gets badly injured in the process. Ash and the others go to Professor Augustine Sycamore's lab to heal Froakie.

Heading to Violet City for the first gym, Ash and company meet Casey, a new trainer and baseball fan who eagerly challenges Ash to a battle. When Ash easily beats all three of her Pokémon with just his Charizard, she gets upset and makes an alliance with Team Rocket to get back at Ash, until she finds out that Team Rocket was just using her.
