The first train of the East Indian Railway, 1854. The Kolkata Suburban Railway is an offshoot of the second passenger railway to be built by the British in India. [1] The first train ran between Howrah and Hooghly stations on 15 August 1854 and was operated by the East Indian Railway (EIR).
