Dewa 19 (pronounced in Indonesian as Dewa Sembilan Belas) is an Indonesian rock band from Surabaya, East Java, led by singer-songwriter Ahmad Dhani. Along with God Bless and Slank , they are dubbed as one of the greatest rock bands in the history of Indonesian popular music.
The song "Respect Yourself" was used by Spike Lee in the soundtrack to his movie Crooklyn, made in 1994. In 1999, The Staple Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where they performed "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There". Pops Staples died of complications from a concussion suffered in December 2000. [16]
After his dismissal from Dewa 19, Lasso became a solo singer. [4] He released his first solo album, the commercially successful Sendiri Dulu, that year which sold over 500.000 copies. Two years later, he released his most successful album Keseimbangan, which featured two songs performed with Dhani. This album sold more than 800.000 copies.
After being rejected by several labels, Dewa 19 was signed to Team Records by Jan Djuhana.
