Gathorne Robert Girdlestone (1881–1950), often known as GRG, was a pioneering orthopaedic surgeon, the founder of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, and the first Nuffield Professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Oxford.
The operation was first described by Gathorne Robert Girdlestone (1881–1950) in 1945. [1] He originally designed it for treatment of tuberculosis and other disorders of the hips. [2] It may thus be known as a "Girdlestone operation". Other surgeons have added various modifications. [citation needed]
Robert Baker Girdlestone was the seventh son of Charles Girdlestone, a Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford. [1] R. B. Girdlestone was minister of St. John's [2] Downshire Hill, Hampstead, then head of the translation department of the British and Foreign Bible Society, and first principal of Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, in the post from 1877 to 1889.
In 1936, Lord Nuffield announced a further gift to Oxford University Medical School which created five clinical chairs, and Professor Gathorne Robert Girdlestone became the first Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1937. [3] During the Second World War the hospital was controlled by the War Office.
