The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) is a 9.2-metre optical telescope designed mainly for spectroscopy. It consists of 91 hexagonal mirror segments each with a 1-metre inscribed diameter, resulting in a total hexagonal mirror of 11.1 by 9.8 m. [ 2 ]
The telescope is a collaboration between Osaka University, University of Maryland, [28] South African Astronomical Observatory, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center [29] and Astro-Biology Center. The project's primary science objective is the study of exoplanets using gravitational microlensing.
