The Red River Gorge is a canyon system on the Red River in east-central Kentucky, United States. Geologically it is part of the Pottsville Escarpment . The gorge lies within the Daniel Boone National Forest and was subsequently designated the Red River Gorge Geological Area , an area of around 29,000 acres (12,000 ha; 120 km 2 ; 45 sq mi). [ 1 ]
The Red River Gorge is also a world-renowned rock climbing destination. A 2021 study estimated that climbers spend nearly $8.7 million annually in the five counties around the gorge.
Other trails include the 7.5-mile (12.1 km) Sand Gap Trail and the 0.75-mile (1.21 km) Balanced Rock Trail. Five miles (8 km) of the 307-mile (494 km) Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail run through the park, including the Whittleton Trail which connects the park to the Red River Gorge Geologic Area.
It flows generally west, through Red River Gorge in the Daniel Boone National Forest, then past Stanton and Clay City. It joins the Kentucky approximately 11 miles (18 km) southeast of Winchester. In 1993, a 20-mile (32 km) stretch of the river in the Red River Gorge was designated by the federal government as a National Wild and Scenic River.
Raven Rock is a sandstone protrusion in the Daniel Boone National Forest, overlooking Kentucky's Red River within the Red River Gorge. The rock is over 1,280 [1] feet tall and has massive cliffs on three sides. Although there is no official trail to the top, it can be accessed by a paved road where a past owner tried to bring tourism to the summit.
