Forest City is also home to the Forest City Owls baseball club which is a member of the Coastal Plain League, a collegiate summer league. The Owls, who play at McNair Field in Forest City, won the CPL championship in 2009 with a record of 51–9, again in 2010 and were ranked as the #1 collegiate summer team in America.
The construction of railroads and cotton mills in Rutherford County during the 1880s and 1890s invigorated the county's communities, none more so than Forest City. The Rutherford Railway Construction Company built a line from Rutherfordton to South Carolina, and Southern Railway and Seaboard Air Line Railroad also ran through the county. [12]

Samuel Henry Miller (June 26, 1921 – March 7, 2019) was an American businessman and philanthropist who propelled the growth of Forest City Material Co. from lumber to real-estate which became Forest City Enterprises. He was the first Jewish person to receive an Archbishop Edward F. Hoban Award for service to the Catholic Church.
