AFT-Kanawha Local 4444 is the locally chartered union of the American Federation of Teachers. [9] [10] AFT-Kanawha represents only teachers in Kanawha County. 4] St Albans High School is one of eight schools in its Kanawha County district. The High School offers some AP classes and according to US news, the High School has an 80% graduation rate for the 2014-2015 school year. Total enrollment in the 2014-2015 school year was 1033 and 59 teachers taught at the school.
The current building was built in 1959, and used as a junior high school. The facility was expanded in 1966, and again in 1992 to its current iteration. Formerly, the high school was located in the heart of the business district on 21st Street. [2] That building is now occupied by the Nitro Community Center and owned by Kings Way Christian Church.

The school opened in 1999 as a result of the consolidation of DuPont High School (AAA) and East Bank High School (AA). Students from both of those former high schools, and from the Cedar Grove and Montgomery areas, attend the school. The school's attendance district runs from the Kanawha-Fayette county line to the Charleston city limits.
The main middle school is South Charleston Middle School (SCMS), which is located on 3rd Ave. SCMS houses grades 6–8. South Charleston High School (SCHS) is one of eight high schools in Kanawha County. SCHS is located on Eagle Way and houses grades 9–12. There are also two colleges located in the city.
