The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) divides the territories of its members into geographic numbering plan areas (NPAs). Each NPA is identified by one or more numbering plan area codes (NPA codes, or area codes), consisting of three digits that are prefixed to each local telephone number having seven digits.
Each three-digit area code has a capacity of 7,919,900 telephone numbers (7,918,900 in the United States). Despite widespread use as fictional telephone numbers in the form NXX 555-XXXX , only line umbers 0100 through 0199 are reserved for this purpose, while 1212 and 4334 are the only assigned uses for directory assistance and other functions.
